We have an interesting history and are in the process of updating a church guide, in which we shall try to throw more light on the 'Fittleworth slab', currently located outside the south porch of the church. It features in this video in the Bald Explorer's enjoyable series.
One interesting former Rector of Fittleworth is Canon Arthur Barwick Simpson (1828-1900), a leading figure in the field of bell-tuning.
Edward Elgar rented 'Brinkwells', nearby, between 1917 and 1921, and it has been speculated that he may have played the organ here. St Mary's was part of a very successful Elgar in Sussex weekend in 2017, and we are enthusiastic about hosting musical events and concerts in this beautiful church.
